History of the Building

The Ducournau Building, in which the Townhouse is located, stands on a portion of an 1818 land grant to Jospeh Tauzin, who came from France in 1771. Francois LaFonte purchased the property in 1820 and, after building the structure, operated a business on the first floor while residing upstairs. Following a succession of owners, the property was purchased in 1881 by J.A. Ducournau, the namesake of the present townhouse.

The property was purchased in 1998 and, following a nearly year-long restoration, was re-opened as the Ducournau Townhouse. The townhouse occupies the upper two floors of this historic building that was constructed circa 1835. It is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places and is located in the heart of the Natchitoches Landmark Historic District overlooking the beautiful Rue Beauport Riverbank Park, nestled along the banks of Cane River Lake.

Over the years, the property has experienced multiple owners, fire and restorations, but it remains loyal to its original character.
